no more cds

okay so i bought this simple belt drive numark turntable recently. what is crucial about this turntable is that it plugs right into my usb port on my computer. so now, i have become independent of cds.

i haven't been to too many places, but i really think that japan, england and sweden are the greatest places to buy music, specifically vinyl, on planet earth. i am always surprised with the quality and variety of selection available here in japan. it seems like they take in a lot of stuff that gets passed up back in the states.

turning 26

i had a birthday last month. so i ate 25 plates of salmon sushi, 1 chocolate cake and 1 hello kitty grape juicebox. it took me about 45 minutes. i could have done it a lot quicker, but some middle aged man next to me kept asking about steven segal.

after i hit 10 plates of salmon. people around me and the employees started to take notice. i was just killing it. but once i reached 18, i started to lose steam, and people around me started asking, why all the salmon?

i failed last year, but this year, i did it! but walking home i almost lost it on a street corner. the whole rest of the day, i was definitely not right. will i do the same next year? maybe not. i'll try to eat 27 of something else. if you have an idea, you got about 11 months to pass it along to me.

pigeons

i finally found a pretty reasonable place to get my film developed. it's a real simple hole in the wall place, but i found a guy who will do it for about half of what the big chain store down the street charges. the weird thing is, this guy keeps forgetting who i am. so maybe i will be a different person each time i come in. after he gave me these photos, he said, "hey ken, you should really watch out for those pigeons"

the beijing report: scorpions in wangfujing

wangfujing is a big shopping district in beijing, filled with plenty of foreign chain stores and restaurants and some chinese stores that are strikingly similar to some other shops that i know. there are also plenty of food vendors offering foreigners certain chinese delicacies. so some taiwanese guys and andrew wanted to see how i would take to scorpion. i couldnt really taste anything. i guess it was pretty crispy. but something happened where it scraped the roof of my mouth. then, gradually after that i noticed my throat started to swell. i felt like crap and my breathing became more stupid. i dont know what that was all about. but i remember asking andrew to take to me the hospital after that. but he did one better, he dragged me into a xinjiang restaurant.those noodles and kebab were exactly what i needed.

the beijing report: the cro's nest

if i lived in beijing, i would definitely be a regular at the cro's nest near workers stadium. man, it was so good and cheap. the beer was free until it ran out of the keg, and a large pizza would cost around 4 dollars. quite a bargain, considering that a large (actually a medium size) from pizza hutt here in japan will cost me a mere 33 dollars.

the beijing report: scariest walk of my life

former president bill clinton once said that the dmz between north and south korea was the scariest place on earth. for me, a walk around the north korean embassy was enough to make the hairs on my back and in my ears stand up. easily, the scariest place i have ever been. yes, even scarier than hobbitsville in lincoln.

around the embassy there were a lot of korean stores, as well. not too far from the north korean embassy is the russian district which was scary because of all the eccentric russians with upside down happy faces.

the beijing report: tiananmen square

two things that hit me, the size and the police/military presence. man, this place was huge! i think this place encompasses at least 3 subway stops. and there were police and military everywhere. i am sure there were also plenty of undercover cops out there as well. and all the military officers marching around were well taller than me. i bet they are all recruited from the country side to come down and march around the popular tourists locations. it was very intimidating. however, most of the se cops and military officers were suprisingly laid back. they were very willing to pose for pictures and exchanged smiles to tourists passing by.

the ポッシボー today in kanayama

today in kanayama, about one too many grown men without girlfriends descended to kanayama's ausunal stage. The ポッシボー was performing. nothing at all odd about grown middle age men dancing and yelling for a girl group whose members do not look a day over 16.

the beijing report: beijing subway

the thing i love about the beijing subway is exactly what i hate about the subway system in nagoya. the subway platform in beijing lies in the middle. they dont have two running along the sides like in nagoya. so let's say i need to head back or i made a mistake and overslept my stop, i can just exit the train and catch the next one without having to walk up the steps and then down the steps again to go back. oh and in beijing riding anywhere you want will cost about 30 cents.

the drawbacks of the beijing subway is that for a city it's size they have surprising ly few lines and stops. but they are currently, building new lines. i think there should be 8 new lines up and running in the next couple years. now there are about 6 lines going. and while a good portion of the trains are new and very modern, some look like they are relics of the cultural revolution.

the beijing report: muscle park

chinese parks are great also because they have free exercise equipment for people to mash on.

the beijing report: the nightlife

at night, andrew and gabe took me out to a nightclub district called sanlitun. i guess you could call it beijing's answer to tokyo's roppongi. sanlitun was wild. some fun clubs and interesting characters. i'll never forget this woman who was extremely upset with what appeared to be her boyfriend. to show him how angry she was, she decided to take off her clothes in the street. obviously, people stopped to gawk and laugh. while she was taking her clothes off, her boyfriend was busy trying to pick up her clothes and to cover her up. sanlitun did not feel like beijing at all. so many cool places and good times and i cant remember ever having to pay a cover charge at any club. (please note that the top three photos are not mine. i pulled them off of one gabe's websites. i know it is pretty obvious.)

the bejing report: foot massage

these girls told me that they work about 12-14 hours a day and have 2 days off a month. man, they must really love to give foot massages.

the beijing report: russian food

i had never eaten russian food before. i wasn't actually sure what they ate...tomatoes? potatoes? gruel? but the food we ate was great. i think andrew had the moscow meal which came with borsky's borsche. i had the stalingrad supper, which included putin's pourage and glasnost gruel. to wash it down, we had some brezhnev green beer which obviously was a healthy choice as it protected us from radiation and lousy perestroika.

best words of advice i received before going down here was, stay away from beautiful women wanting to have tea with you or take you to an art show.
