on education

a big problem facing korean schools in japan is the lack of accreditation. graduates of korean schools face huge difficulties in entering japanese universities. many universities have a quota of how many korean school graduates they will allow. some students take correspondence courses in order to join japanese universities. while many will enter the korean university in tokyo or go to work for korean run companies in japan.

in case you are wondering, korean school students can wear two types of uniforms.

the u.s. olympic swimming trials from omaha, nebraska were a big deal in japan. nhk tv had nightly reports of the swim trials. i guess some japanese swimmer was excited to see who he would face. last friday my co-workers were telling me as soon as they could that hansen lost. i replied back, "who is hansen?" i like the olympics, but it seems that the average japanese is more knowledgeable when it comes to olympic completion. i think the average japanese person could definitely name more american olympic athletes than the average american could.

bumping in and around the 7-5-8 (inuyama dinner cruise)

5 of my girlfriends took me out to inuyama after work for a dinner cruise on the kiso river. i had a lot of enjoy. i went back to the office on monday and told some co-workers about the dinner cruise. i mentioned that the kiso river was very beautiful (tounge firmly planted in cheek) and one of the guys in accounting, said, "come on! you mean that dump? those fish can't even see where they are swimming"

inuyama is one my favorite cities in aichi. the mountain of the dog, has a castle dating back to the 1500s. with a nice color photo exhibit on all the castles in japan, inuyama castle is truly an "old meets new" thing, that lonely planet and so many other sub-par guide books written by natto eating, pony tail wearing, east asian studies majors, have told you about.
